Credit card reps. are just people too

DEAR HELOISE: Recently, I was struggling with paying my credit card, and I was at my wits’ end. I noticed on my statement that the company had charged me a late fee! I know I should pay off my card each month, or at least a big chunk, and I usually do, but lately that’s been difficult.

I decided to face the music and call the credit-card company. I was pleasantly surprised that the associate was friendly and understanding. Because I normally keep my account in good standing, she offered to waive the late fee! (Of course, I allowed her to!)

My reason for writing? When you come down to it, when you call, you are just talking to another person, not “the bank,” which can sound intimidating.
