Credit card scheme relied on stolen info

The credit card industry reports fraud rates are among the lowest in two decades.

But Fort Wayne Police Detective Chrys O’Connor remains skeptical of those numbers, given what he does for a living.

O’Connor recently wrapped up an investigation into a ring of people using phony credit cards allegedly manufactured by Joseph “Kilo” Henderson, a federal fugitive now charged in Allen County.

O’Connor believes Henderson is largely responsible for many, if not most, of the phony credit cards floating around the Midwest.

And Allen County prosecutors charged “Kilo” with being responsible for similar activity around Fort Wayne.

Specifically, prosecutors allege he provided hundreds of such cards to a local ring, which used the cards to buy merchandise at area retailers.

Henderson would then resell the merchandise for cash.

CHENNAI: The credit card scam is growing bigger. Fraudster Umesh Balaravindran, arrested on October 5, has told police he did not use the skimmer for all thefts, but bought credit card and debit card details stolen and uploaded on some websites. A hunt is on for those who uploaded such details on websites. Police have also intensified the hunt for fraudsters who used skimmers to steal data from ATMs.

“Umesh said he did not use a skimmer to steal data from a card at an ATM in Kilpauk. But there is enough evidence to show a skimmer was used there. We are trying to find out who it was,” said a senior police officer. Police suspect there are many gangs in the city which steal credit and debit data.

Umesh alias ‘Shorty’, arrested by the central crime branch for withdrawing Rs 32 lakh with the help of credit cards of 64 persons, was again taken into police custody on October 12. On Friday, he was sent back to jail.
