NEW YORK (LowCards.com) — Holiday shopping on Cyber Monday was extremely strong, with analysts estimating sales to be 15% to 33% above last year’s totals. Not only are a greater number of people shopping online, but research shows they are spending more when paying with a credit card.

Consumers spend an average of $ 82.10 on a single online transaction with a credit card payment compared with $ 58.29 by those using a debit card, according to Javelin Strategy & Research’s latest Online Retail Payments Forecast. The Government Procurement Service (GPS), which is tasked with “efficiently” buying equipment and services for the state, used the Government Procurement Card scheme it oversaw to spend thousands of pounds on curries, drinking sessions and trips to New York in the last year of the Labour government, the Daily Telegraph can reveal.

Jeremy Heywood, the Cabinet Secretary, will be asked to investigate why the cards were used at Newz, a Liverpool nightclub frequented by the singer Cheryl Cole and lingerie model Abbey Clancy and which sells cocktails named ‘Sex On Fire’ and ‘Liquid Cocaine’. Staff spent £70 at the bar, known for its red lighting and loud dance music, over three visits between May and December 2009.

The total bill for the agency’s cards between April 2009 and March 2010 came to £1,710,338.
