Cab drivers look to mobile payment for credit card processing
News from Washington Post:

Grand Cab Co. driver Kalechristos Jima has been driving in Washington for 15 years. He works Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, usually carrying 10 to 15 passengers a night.

Jima thinks he’d get significantly more business if he had a device to process credit cards. Every night, potential passengers turn him away because they don’t have cash, he said.

Not accepting cards has created “some kind of animosity between the rider and us,” Jima said.

Early next year, Jima will join a small group of D.C. cab drivers accepting credit card payments on their smartphones. He recently signed up for the German smartphone app myTaxi, which allows customers to book cabs and pay for rides using their credit cards.

The company will soon distribute credit card readers — to be attached to the drivers’ smartphones — so they can accept payment from any riders they pick up, even if they’re not myTaxi passengers. MyTaxi drivers are currently charged 2.75 percent of each transaction, and the same will apply for credit card transactions.

Procedure for Credit Card Debt Validation
News from Opposing Views:

by Mandy Mitzsheva

Credit card debt can build up quickly.

Comstock/Comstock/Getty Images

Unpaid credit card debt can haunt you for a long time. The original creditor may try to collect the money from you. If this isn’t successful, the creditor may hire a collection agency. As a debtor, you do have rights. The collection agency must verify a debt, if you request that it do so. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act outlines the procedure you can use to obtain this verification.

Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act governs consumer debt collection. Some consumers confuse the terms “validation” and “verification.” Under the FDCPA, each term has a distinct meaning. The FDCPA requires a collection agency to send you a written “validation notice” within five days after it first contacts you. This notice specifies the name of the creditor a…………… continues on Opposing Views

Regrets about holiday spending? Change that now
News from Cache Valley Daily:

SALT LAKE CITY – While the flurry of holiday spending may be good for the economy, it can prove to be exactly the opposite for an individual or family struggling to pay for necessities. In response to a new survey, one in four people said they’ll need more than three months to pay off what they charged as holiday expenses.

Melody Bell, executive director of Financial Beginnings, a nonprofit group that teaches money-management skills, says a new year means a new chance to get on track with a monthly budget, which starts by defining financial goals for the year.

“It’s such a hassle sometimes writing out the budget. But really, statistic after statistic has shown that we are more likely to achieve our goals if we write out a plan. And it’s not enough to just say, ‘I resolve to have no debt this year.'”

In another pre-holiday survey from the American Research Group (ARG), people said they’d spend an average of about $ 850 t…………… continues on Cache Valley Daily

10 Credit Card Tips for 2013
News from ABC News:

It’s time for new beginnings, and perhaps that means a new credit card. Finding a good card — and managing it well — can boost your buying power and credit score. But be careful. Misusing your credit could turn 2013 into a costly year. Here are 10 tips for getting the right card.

Tip 1: Know your credit The state of your credit will determine what card you can get. If you have good to great credit (FICO score of 720 and above), you’ll likely qualify for numerous rewards cards that cater to your personal tastes. There are rewards cards for hotels, airlines and gas stations. Others will give you cash back. Those with decent credit (620 to 720 FICO credit score) may need to stick with a plain-vanilla credit card with no annual fee. For those with no credit or blemished credit (FICO credit score below 620), a secured credit card may be your only option. Secured cards require an upfront deposit to serve as collateral against the credit limit.

Tip 2: Read the fine print It may not be the most thrilling read, but the details of a credit card’s agreement will help you differentiate it from others. The terms and conditions are usually posted on an issuer’s website, so you can read them before you apply. The agreement gives the annual percentage rate, or APR, for purchases, balance transfers and cash advances. It also will tell you about late fe…………… continues on ABC News

Voting records on EBT credit-card use examined

Voting records on EBT credit-card use examined
News from The Sun:

By Bob Katzen

THE HOUSE AND SENATE: There were no roll calls in the House or Senate last week.

Gov. Deval Patrick in July signed a law restricting the use of electronic-benefit transfer cards by welfare recipients. The law prohibits EBT cards from being used for strip clubs, products from adult bookstores and adult paraphernalia stores, firearms, ammunition, cruises, vacation services, body piercings, jewelry, rent-to-own stores and bail. Prior to this new law, only the purchase of alcoholic beverages, lottery tickets and tobacco products was prohibited.

The law also created a special Cashless Assistance Commission to study and report by Dec. 31 on the development of a cashless payment system under which all bills, including utilities and rent, would be paid directly by the card. The commission’s report is finalized but won’t be officially issued until the end of December. The Ripples Group, a private consulting firm, was paid $ 100,000 to conduct the study. It presented the commission with nine options ranging from making no changes to implementing a completely cashless system, under which all bills paid and purchases made would be made by use of the EBT card. Other options included a cashless system except for $ 100 cash per month; prohibiting card transactions at all ATMs; and prohibiting the use of cards out of state.

Use of Credit Cards During Boxing Day Sale 2012 Increase 30%
News from International Business Times AU:

Retail therapy may be slow and down, but credit card transactions during the 2012 Boxing Day Sales nonetheless have increased by as much as 30 per cent for the National Australia Bank, it said on Thursday.

During the Wednesday mad dash for super huge discounts, NAB said it processed a total of 3,839,518 ATM, EFTPOS and debit and credit card transactions, at a peak transaction rate of 100 per second, versus the 2011 record of just below three million, at a peak rate of 80 per second.

Consumer watchdog Choice’s Ingrid Just surmised the jump in credit card transaction usage was spurred by people moving more into online shopping which, of course, requires a credit card if they wish to purchase anything. That, plus Australians are shying away from carrying lots of cash and using more of EFTPOS.

The Freshman $ 1000: How To Help Your College Student With Credit Card Debt
News from TheStreet.com:

Instead of gaining the infamous freshman 15 of extra pounds, your student has fallen prey to the Freshman $ 1000 by quickly running up credit card charges soon after arriving on campus. But unlike other mistakes that your student is bound to make, getting into debt and missing payments can affect his future for years to come. And because of the Credit CARD Act of 2009, unless your student has significant income, you most likely are a co-signer on your college student’s credit card and their debt can directly impact your credit as well.

“Unfortunately, financial disasters are not like broken bones that can quickly heal. Credit mistakes that young people make have a way of hanging out for a very long time and on-the-job training in the world of credit debt can be very painful,” says John Ulzheimer, President of Consumer Education for

Credit card scandal prompts questions of controls over school spending
News from Nashua Telegraph:

WILTON – For many taxpayers around the region, a spending scandal in the Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative School District this year left them with a question: Could this happen in my town?

In the wake of the incident, which led to the resignation of Superintendent Trevor Ebel after an auditor’s report found district credit cards were used to purchase thousands of dollars worth of restaurant meals, alcohol and expensive hotel rooms at out-of-state conferences, many districts around the region reviewed their spending practices and policies restricting credit card usage.

And while the school systems agreed that their practices were enough to protect taxpayers against abuses, there is little state or federal guidance when it comes to what is an appropriate price for travel or out-of-town meals.

Ebel charged nearly $ 2,000 in inappropriate purchases on the School District’s credit card in 2010-11. He also took cash advances from the district, knowingly violating district policy, according to minutes of an April 24 School Board meeting. The district credit card was in Ebel’s name and kept in his possession. After the audit report, Ebel repaid the district for some of the charges.

Credit card companies will not be able to give unsolicited credit limit increases without cardholders’ consent, under new rules proposed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (Photo: inSing)

It will not be so easy to increase your credit card limit or even sign on to get extra plastic should proposed changes by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) come into effect.

The authority is proposing changes to credit card and unsecured credit rules, in an attempt to prevent those at risk of credit problems getting into greater debt, among other reasons.

The changes, which have been released as a consultation paper, will affect both financial institutions and individuals seeking to get loans – whether they be in the form of credit cards, charge cards, or secured loans, it said in a press release.

For one, banks will need to review outstanding debt and credit limits for all loans taken by a borrower across different financial institutions, before they issue a new credit card or uns…………… continues on inSing.com News

Year-End Debt Checkup: Make Sure Yours Is Healthy Debt
News from DailyFinance:

Americans have set another record. It’s not a good one, though.

U.S. consumer debt hit an all-time high in October, with borrowing rising by $ 14.2 billion over September levels, to total $ 2.75 trillion. But there’s a little silver lining in the news: Most of the gain — 76 percent of it — came from auto loans and student loans. Only 24 percent reflected a rise in credit card borrowing. That’s worth noting, because all debt is not equal.

The bright side
Some debt is not only good, but critical. Without the ability to take out mortgages, for example, most people couldn’t afford to buy their own homes. Without student loans, many…………… continues on DailyFinance

Credit card use may be hampering Salvation Army collections
News from WSAU:

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WSAU) – The use of credit cards may be one of the reasons the Salvation Army kettle drive in Fond du Lac is in danger of failing to meet its goal.

Many shoppers drop their loose change in the red kettles, but with consumers not as likely to use cash for their purchases, there is simply less loose change to share. The problem isn’t unique to Fond du Lac.

The army says it has a donation goal of 156 thousand dollars during this Christmas season and so far less than half of that total – 73 thousand dollars – has been raised in Fond du Lac. A spokesperson says the organization is usually at 70 to 80 percent of its goal at this time in the season.
